After the initial experiences, the growth phase began in the industry: the number of new wind turbines was rising sharply. Parallel to this, these turbines were becoming more powerful and therefore also larger.

With this large growth the existing technology for fixing the rotor blades to the hub reached its limits. Up till now the cast flanges were “stuck” onto the small blades, which had a diameter at the root of the rotor blade of 800 to a maximum of 1,000 mm, in a procedure using heat. With the aid of these flanges the rotor blades could be screwed onto the hub. However, stability and durability and thereby safety were reduced with the increasing size of the rotors. The “flange adhesive technology” had reached the limit of its effectiveness. A safer and more precise substitute had to be found.
